Dhoni Fans Disappointed After He Denied a Single to Daryl Mitchell in PBKS Match
CSK vs PBKS: MS Dhoni denying a single to Daryl Mitchell leaves Thala fans disappointed. 'Selfish,' says internet.

In a rare twist in his career, MS Dhoni faced criticism for his actions in the final over of an IPL 2024 contest. He was questioned about his decision to deny Daryl Mitchell, known for his powerful hits, the chance to bat in the last over of CSK’s innings against PBKS at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, May 1.

The drama unfolded as Dhoni faced three dot balls in the 20th over bowled by Arshdeep Singh. Despite starting the over with a boundary through the covers, Dhoni struggled with a couple of slower deliveries from the left-arm pacer. However, in the 3rd legal delivery of the final over, Dhoni hit a shot to deep cover and Mitchell immediately set off for a run.

Surprisingly, Dhoni seemed uninterested in taking the run, causing Mitchell to run to the other end and then quickly return to the non-striker’s end before the fielder could retrieve the ball and throw it back, causing confusion.

Here’s the Video:

Although Dhoni redeemed himself on the fifth ball of the over by hitting Arshdeep for a huge six over deep extra cover, his actions drew criticism from fans on social media, with some labelling it as ‘selfish’.

Commenting on the incident, one user on ‘X’ said, “There are very few batters in the last 3 years who have scored runs consistently in all 3 formats. Mitchell is probably the best among them. Didn’t like him being denied the strike, he is not a tailender.”

Another echoed similar sentiments, stating, “MS Dhoni refusing a single in the 20th over with Daryl Mitchell at the other end. Embarrassing stuff,” while a third user remarked, “Never seen more selfish batsman than dhoni.”

Meanwhile, Dhoni faced a rare run-out in the match, losing his wicket for the first time this season as CSK posted 162/7 on the board. On the other hand, Punjab Kings had a cakewalk chasing the target, reaching 163 with over 2 overs to spare.
