Twilight TV Reboot To Be ‘Animated’ Series: Report
Author Stephenie Meyer is expected to be part of the animated TV series.

It’s been more than 15 years since the release of Twilight, the first film of the five-part Twilight Saga franchise. Now, it appears that the romance fantasy film is back at the centre of pop culture. In April 2023, rumours began circulating about the possible TV reboot of the mega-hit franchise, which was based on author Stephenie Meyer’s books of the same name. On March 5, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns confirmed that the TV adaptation is in the works. While speaking at the Morgan Stanley media conference, Burns revealed that the adaptation is being developed as an animated series.

Burns said, “We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.” This came as a shock to many who were expecting the reboot to be live-action. Twilight Saga film producer Wyck Godfrey and former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig will be the executive producers on the new Twilight series. Author Stephenie Meyer is also expected to be part of the series. However, it is still unclear to what extent the TV series will remain true to Stephanie Meyer’s books or if they will take a different turn.

The last addition to the Twilight universe came with the 2020 book Midnight Sun, a companion book written by Meyer that retold Twilight from the perspective of Edward Cullen.

The first Twilight movie, starring Kristen Stewart as 17-year-old schoolgirl Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as vampire Edward Cullen, was released on November 21, 2008. After the unexpected success of the first film, four movies followed suit, New Moon was released on November 20, 2009, Eclipse was released on June 30, 2010, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 was released on November 18, 2011, and the final film Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was released on November 16, 2012. The franchise grossed over $5.28 billion worldwide and cultivated a strong fanbase.

Last year, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. During the podcast, Hardwicke mentioned that if the movies were to be made today, she would endorse Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. She endorsed actor Lewis Tan in the role of Jacob Black.

Twilight is not the only franchise that will have an upcoming TV adaptation. In February, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced that they would make a 10-season-long TV series based on the Harry Potter books. The series will debut in 2026. JK Rowling will be the executive producer of the show.
