Karan Johar’s directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani became an instant hit among fans. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, this film entertained audiences worldwide, grossing over Rs 300 crore at the box office. Up until now, fans perceived the story as a work of pure imagination. However, Karan Johar, in a recent interview, dropped a bombshell. The filmmaker hinted that he may have drawn subconscious inspiration from a prominent Bollywood power couple for the narrative. Any guesses? It was Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna.
“Maybe subconsciously (I got inspired). They have a tremendous friendship in their marriage. I’ve had dinners with them, meals with them, hung out with them. And there’s a terrific kind of comfort in their camaraderie. He finds her hilarious, she finds him hilarious, for different reasons. So I felt it wasn’t impossible for people who come from two different demographics of society, two stratas, to actually find love. It’s like we put ourselves in boxes. Like when we’re finding a relationship, we put ourselves in places where we’re comfortable. But tomorrow, you can fall in love with someone anywhere,” Karan said while speaking to Mid-Day.
Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna started dating during Umesh Mehra’s 1999 action film International Khiladi. In 2001, the dynamic duo took the plunge and tied the knot. The two are parents to a son, Aarav, and a daughter, Nitara.
Prior to the trailer launch, Karan Johar went live on his Instagram and revealed that the main characters of the film Rocky and Rani both were inspired by real-life people. “Rocky is definitely inspired by somebody who I can’t reveal right now. Rani is like many people I have met. In fact, a member of the media that I knew very well and dressed a lot like the way Rani does,” he said.
Coming back to Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, apart from Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, the film also featured Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly in the lead roles. The movie’s soul-stirring music was a key highlight, and it was crafted by the renowned composer Pritam and the lyrics were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
In the film, Rocky Randhawa (played by Ranveer Singh) and Rani Chatterjee (played by Alia Bhatt) fall in love despite their different backgrounds. To win their families’ approval, they swap homes for three months to test their bond. The movie was released on July 28.
