The film Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai is one of the most famous works of director Raj Kapoor. But there is a unique story behind the making of the film. It is reported that Raj Kapoor first met with actress Padmini in Moscow. He was reportedly inspired by one of her performances. After Chori Chori in 1956, Nargis did not want to work with Raj Kapoor due to some personal issues. The actor’s confidence started to drop as some of his films failed to leave their mark. As the veteran actor was going through a difficult time, he met with Padmini who then helped him to gain back his confidence.
According to reports, Padmini travelled to Russia with her sister for a special performance. She also had some scheduled work in a Russian film. It was at an event the celebrities met each other for the first time. They were then seen together in Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai. Raj Kapoor was hesitant about working in films after many of his films failed to perform well.
However, Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai became a massive hit. The songs were also loved by the audiences. It is said that this is the first time in the Indian film industry that a female lead actress was portrayed in such a bold manner. The duo then went on to deliver some great hits.
There was a scene in the film where Kammo, the character played by Padmini, was seen bathing under a waterfall wearing a black saree. It is said that the trend of actresses bathing under waterfalls likely started from this film. Several years later, in an interview with Filmfare, she was asked about this scene. Responding to it, she mentioned that it wasn’t at all bold for her.
Raj Kapoor was highly inspired by the waterfall scene and decided to make a film. The name of the film is Ram Teri Ganga Maili. There was an iconic waterfall scene in which Mandakini was seen standing under a waterfall wearing a white saree. This created a massive craze among the fans.
Directed by Raj Kapoor, Ram Teri Ganga Maili featured Rajiv Kapoor, Divya Rana, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rakesh Bedi, Sushma Seth and Urmila Bhatt in leading roles. The storyline was penned by Raj Kapoor himself while Radhu Karmakar handled the cinematography department.
