BHUBANESWAR: Steamrollering the Opposition, the BJD on Tuesday won Zilla Parishad (ZP) president posts in 28 districts out of 30. The regional party had a clear majority in 26 districts while it won Koraput and Gajapati districts to increase its tally. The Congress had to be content with two ZP chiefs.The results are a big setback for the Congress which had ZP presidents in 11 districts after the 2007 polls. The BJD had won in 15 districts while the BJP won in two. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and an Independent had won in one district each.Koraput district, where the BJD and the Congress were evenly poised with 14 ZP seats each, went to the regional outfit. what tipped the scales in favour of the BJD was the support of Independent ZP member from Narayanpatna Zero Mouka owing allegiance to Left and Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangha (CMAS).The Congress won the post in Kandhamal district as the BJP which had three ZP members abstained. The Congress had won nine out of 18 seats in the district while the BJD had managed only six members. In Gajapati district, the BJD won seven out of 14 seats while the Congress and the BJP were successful in four and three seats respectively. The ZP chief post went to the BJD with the BJP abstaining. The post has gone to women in 12 districts.
