New Delhi: This is not the first time that terror came knocking on Uttar Pradesh's doors. Over the last two years in particular, UP appears to have become caught in a vicious cycle of terror.
On May 22 2007, serial blasts in Gorakhpur, crude bombs planted in polythene bags and tiffin boxes on bicycles and motorcycles injure four people.
On March 7 2006, 20 people were killed in twin bomb explosions that rattled the temple town of Benaras. First at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple and the other near the Benaras Railway station.
Year 2005 also saw two major terror attacks in the state. On July 5 security forces foiled an attack on Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya. Five terrorist were gunned down as they tried to blast the make shift temple there.
Later on July 28, 10 people were killed and 79 injured when a bomb ripped through Patna-Delhi Shramjeevi Express near Jaunpur.
With two serial bomb blasts in Uttar Pradesh within seven months, it seems that one of the largest states in the country, is becoming a new soft target for terrorists.
2007 witnessed four major terror attacks rocked various places in India. Forty-two people lost their lives in twin blasts at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat in Hyderabad and blasts at Ajmer Sharif Dargah in October 2007 claimed three lives
In a blast at the historic Mecca Masjid in May 2007 as many as 14 persons were killed and over 50 others injured.
Earlier in February 2007, bombs detonated on train headed through northern India for Pakistan, killing 68 people.
Despite tight security measures, India remains vulnerable to terror attacks.
