CHENNAI: A habeas corpus writ plea has been made in the HC by A Raja, son of ex-minister Veerapandi Arumugam, to transfer his father from Tiruchy to Salem prison. According to petitioner, following registration of a complaint by the inspector, CCB, Salem, for various offences relating to land grab, he was arrested by the Salem Police. The local Judicial Magistrate remanded him in judicial custody, with a specific direction to lodge him in Salem prison. But the police took him to Tiruchy jail.  Petitioner contended that Arumugam had been lodged in Trichy prison, to prevent his kith and kin from visiting him. The SC had categorically held that the right of visitation of a prisoner was his fundamental one, his counsel A Saravanan pointed out. A similar petition was filed by Nalini, wife of former MLA B Ranganathan, who had been arrested  in a  land grab case and lodged in Vellore prison. Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, before whom the petitions came up today, posted them for further hearing on Sept 12.
