KOCHI: With wrong parking creating traffic snarls, the traffic police will take steps to mark the places in the city where  parking is allowed. The programme will be launched with the help of the Road Transport Authority and will be completed soon."Wrong parking has always been a major headache for the traffic police," police sources said.“We will launch an initiative to identify places in commercial areas  where  parking can be allowed. A study will be conducted with the assistance of the RTO and the project will be implemented after conducting a test trial. Parking spaces will be earmarked and open spaces  selected for the purpose. Parking is a basic need and a major reason for the traffic snarls in the city is parking at wrong places. Busy places like Broadway, Marine Drive and M G Road will be given priority and the project will be implemented there soon,” traffic police sources said.“Parking is not only a problem in commercial areas but also in apartment complexes which are increasing rapidly in the city. The number of cars per family has increased significantly since 1995. In the initial stages, the apartment builders had paid little attention to providing parking space. Cars are still parked on the open roads near apartments,” a traffic police officer said. There are also allegations that the corporation has failed to take any action to solve traffic problems in the city. “We had taken the traffic issue with the corporation several times. But, apart from some discussion, no action has been taken yet. It is not the traffic police which has to repair the road, erect barricades and make marking.   In the wake of North RoB demolition, the police have demanded that the roads must be repaired. But even after three weeks, many roads in the city have not been repaired. The lethargic attitude of the PWD and the corporation is another reason for the traffic snarls, traffic police sources said.
