Mumbai: In a departure from her raunchy dance numbers, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty will be showcasing her classical dancing skills in her forthcoming Indo-Chinese film The Desire - Journey of a Woman, for which she took Odissi lessons.
Shilpa's dance moves have always rocked the box office be it her UP, Bihar... desi item number in Shool or her Shut Up and Bounce in Dostana. But in her next release she will turning the tables a bit with the classical dance form, that posed some difficulty initially.
"I took lessons on dance as I had no clue about the Odissi dance form. I took training from Rasikant Mahapatra, who is one of the best Odissi teachers. Also, as I am a Bharatnatyam dancer it was difficult for me to do this dance form. Like I am known for my hip movements...I am very famous for that so normally what happens is when a dancer shows you a step automatically your style comes in. So I did hip movements while learning Odissi," Shilpa said.
"And Rasikantji used to yell at me for the hip movements. Rasikantji was tired as it was difficult to curb hip movements. I took almost one month of training from him. But I loved and enjoyed it. Odissi is a beautiful dance form. But when I saw the end product of the film I felt good. It was all worth it," she said.
Shilpa will be seen again on the big screen for the first time after her marriage in this long-stalled film, directed by R Sarath and produced by her mother Sunanda Shetty.
The Desire... stars Shilpa and Chinese actor Xia Yu in lead roles, along with actress Jaya Prada, Anupam Kher, Sheetal Menon and Sachin Khedekar.
In the film, Shilpa essays the role of Goutami, a celebrated Odissi dancer and Xia Yu plays Jai Leang, an artist.
"The story revolves around Goutami and Jai. They get introduced to each other during Goutami's tour to Malaysia for a performance. Goutami's grace and charm appeals to Jai and he falls in love with her but she does not reciprocate his feelings..The film follows the journey of their respective lives."
