BANGALORE: Arguing against the portrayal of ‘negative’ news in the media, retired IPS officer K V R Tagore said that print and electronic media must make an effort to talk about people who have made a significant contribution to society instead of dwelling on stories of crime and arrest. He said that the media tends to ‘highlight’ or ‘sensationalise’ news of a particular kind and these news items are predominantly negative in nature. “There is an audience for crime stories and it often seems like journalists are just trying to give the audience what they want. The media should glorify the good instead,” he explained. Echoing his stand, Dr Mahesh Joshi, Deputy Director General of Bangalore Doordarshan Kendra, said that print and electronic media need to be aware of their responsibilities.
