Bhopal: Two days after a temple stampede in Datia led to a loss of 115 lives, 17 policemen and 4 officials including the SP, collector, SDM and Sub Divisional Officer of police have been suspended.
The onlookers alleged that it was a lathicharge by the police on the devotees that led to the stampede. However, police have dismissed any such claims and have maintained that a rumour of the bridge collapsing sparked the stampede.
The incident took place on the bridge over river Sindh on Sunday at the Ratangarh temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh. A video clip accessed by CNN-IBN captures the moments just before the stampede-as panic set in and people tried to cross the overcrowded bridge.
In the past too, over 50 pilgrims were washed away at the same spot in 2006 and the bridge on which Sunday's stampede started, was built thereafter.
