A Guide to Staying Safe from Beaming on Roblox
A Guide to Staying Safe from Beaming on Roblox
Roblox is one of the most popular gaming platforms, with children being a large percentage of the user base. It's also home to a complex economy worth billions in digital trades. This makes it a prime target for hackers and scammers. Beaming is a huge problem on Roblox. If you are worried about beaming or have been beamed, we’ve got you covered. This wikiHow article teaches you everything you need to know about beaming.
What is beaming in Roblox?

How do beamers steal accounts?

There are a variety of ways beamers can steal accounts. The following are a few techniques: Phishing: Phishing is when someone sends a link to a fraudulent website that is designed to steal data. Oftentimes beamers will join a Roblox community, such as a Discord server, and private message members with a link to something that looks like an official Roblox website. It will have a URL that is similar to the official Roblox website. The Home page will look identical. Some fake Roblox accounts can even generate pages that look like your user profile. The target logs in to one of these fake websites, thinking they are logging in to the official Roblox website. Then the hacker has access to their login information, which they can use to steal their account. Social engineering: Social engineering is when a hacker convinces you to give up your login or account information. One example is someone may message you and compliment your avatar, and tell you they want to create GFX (graphic effects) for your avatar. They’ll tell you they need a specific piece of code or a “.har” file to create these effects. What you actually end up sending them are your web browser cookies that keep you logged in. The hacker can then use that information to steal your account. Keylogging: Keylogging is when a hacker installs malicious software on your computer that records your keyboard activity. This may be a mod, a third-party hack, or a web browser extension. They may tell you it will give you free Robux, or allow you to hack the game or other players. Once it is installed, the hacker monitors all your keyboard activity. When you log in to Roblox, they’ll have access to your account. Guessing: If you have a password that is particularly easy to guess, or if you have a security question that’s easy to figure out, a hacker can simply guess your password by finding out a little bit of information about you. SIM Swapping: SIM Swapping is when a hacker gathers enough information about you that they are able to contact your wireless carrier and convince them to transfer your phone number to a different SIM card that they control. Once they do this, they can intercept your text messages and gain access to your two-factor authentication tokens.

What happens to stolen accounts and items?

They are generally sold on the black market. Even though selling items off-platform is against Roblox’s terms of service, there are underground marketplaces where items can be traded for real money or cryptocurrency. These include websites, online casinos, and Discord servers. Once an account with limited items is stolen, beamers will try to sell those items as quickly as possible.

Preventing Beaming

Never share your login information. This includes your password, your web browser cookies, your two-factor authentication codes, or your backup codes. Employees from Roblox will never ask for your password. You are unlikely to get free Robux by entering your information on a sketchy website. If someone says they need a piece of code or your cookies to get an awesome hack to work, they’re probably lying.

Add an email address to your account. Adding an email address to your account helps to keep it more secure. It allows you to change your password if you forget it, or if your account becomes compromised. Make sure your email address is verified. Do not use someone else's email address on your account. You should only have one verified email address on your account that belongs to you.

Use strong and unique passwords. Do not use the same password for all your accounts. If one account is compromised, then all accounts that use the same password are also compromised. Make sure you use a strong password with a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. The best way to create and manage strong passwords is to use a password manager.

Enable two-factor authentication. When two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled, it adds an extra layer of security to your account. Anyone who tries to log in to your account will also need to enter a one-time password sent to your email or to your phone as a text message, or from an authentication app. This adds an extra hoop that beamers need to jump through.

Log out when you are done playing. This is especially true if you are using a public or shared computer. If you do not log out when you are done playing, someone else can get on your computer and gain access to your account.

Be careful of in-game forms. The only time you should ever enter your login information is when you are logging into the official Roblox website or the official Roblox app. If any in-game or in-experience form asks for your login information or any personal information, do not provide it.

Watch out for phishing websites. The official Roblox website is www.roblox.com. Check the URL before logging in. Make sure it ends in “.com” and not something else like, “.co,” “.cx” “.co.com” or “.com.af”. Make sure it says “roblox” in the URL and not “rsblox,” “roblzx,” “röblox” or something similar. Make sure there is nothing before, after or replacing the “www.”, like “site.roblox”, or “www—roblox”. The URL may look very similar to the official website, but if there are any differences, do not trust it.

Be careful what software or web browser extensions you install. Hackers will often get you to download malicious software by claiming it’s a game hack or a web browser extension that will help you, or that you can get free Robux. Don’t fall for it. Do not install any third-party software that you didn’t download from a trusted source. If you’re a minor, ask your parents before installing any software. Roblox does not produce any official web browser extensions or apps other than the official app. Make sure you have antivirus software active on your computer at all times. Do not install any web browser extensions from unknown sources. Do not open any executable (.exe) files if you don’t know what they are.

Do not share any of your game files over the internet. Hackers may try to get you to share your cookies by claiming they can hack your game or teach you how to beam by asking you to send them a piece of Java code, a JSON file, or a “.har” file. In nearly all cases, they are trying to trick you into sending your cookies, which they can use to log into your account. Don’t trust anyone asking you to send specific files or information from your game. Don’t try to hack the game. Just play fair.

What can I do if I have been beamed?

Scan your device for malware. If you installed any sketchy third-party apps or browser extensions, uninstall them immediately. Run an antivirus scan and scan for malware. You can use Malwarebytes to scan for malware. Make sure there are no keyloggers on your device that can steal any other information you have on your device.

Change your password immediately. Time is of the essence here. Hackers may try to remove your email address, which will prevent you from being able to reset your password. As soon as you realize your account has been compromised, you need to log in to the official Roblox website and reset your password. If you are not able to log in with your normal password, click Forgot my password and go through the steps of resetting your password that way. If your email address has been removed from your account, you’ll need to move on to the next step.

Contact Roblox support. Regardless of whether or not you are able to recover your account by resetting your password, you need to contact Roblox support. If you’ve had any items stolen, Roblox support says they can do a one-time rollback per account. This may not be helpful if you’ve been a victim more than once, but they say they will consider each instance on a case-by-case basis. At the very least, it will alert the Roblox team to what has happened so that they can take action and prevent it from happening to anyone else.

Secure your account. If you are able to regain access to your account, you need to take all the proper steps to make sure your account is secured. Change your password to a strong password, enable 2FA, and add a verified email address to your account
