Is Andrew Garfield gay or straight?
Andrew Garfield publicly identifies as straight, but is open to other sexual experiences. In a 2018 interview with Out magazine to discuss his role as the gay Prior Walter in the play Angels in America, Garfield stated, "Up until this point, I've only been sexually attracted to women. My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge…. I have an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time. But, if I were to identify, I would identify as heterosexual." Has Andrew Garfield ever dated a man? Not that we know of. He is pretty private about his personal life, but we do know he dated Emma Stone (his The Amazing Spider-Man costar) from about 2011 to 2015.
Why do people think Andrew Garfield is gay?
Rumors about Garfield's sexuality have circulated over the years for a LOT of reasons. The actor himself has appeared in LGBTQ+ roles and has done and said things some witnesses view as "evidence" of queer sexuality, but he's only ever publicly identified as straight. Here is a quick timeline of events that caused fans to wonder about his sexual orientation: In 2014, Garfield played a transgender woman in the Arcade Fire's music video for "We Exist." In 2017, he appeared in the role of gay character Prior Walter in the play Angels in America and claimed the role made him "feel gay, just without the physical act," which caused some viewers to wonder if he was secretly gay. This comment also received backlash from some in the LGBTQ+ community, who felt Garfield was belittling the character's sexual orientation. In 2017, at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony, as Ryan Gosling was heading up to the stage to accept his award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for La La Land, Garfield and Ryan Reynolds exchanged a passionate lip-lock. Garfield initially told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, "I just wanted Ryan to know that I loved him no matter whether he won or lost," before engaging Colbert in an equally passionate kiss. Garfield later said on The Graham Norton Show that it was "a ridiculous thing. I said to Ryan Reynolds, 'If you win, kiss me instead of your wife.'" But when Reynolds didn't win, the two went ahead with the kiss anyway. His 2018 interview with Out magazine, in which he claimed to be straight but that he has "an openness to any impulses that may arise within me," caused some fans to speculate he could be secretly gay. In 2019, he said in an interview with The Independent about his role as Spider-Man (whom he played in Marc Webb's 2012 and 2014 movies): "I didn’t feel represented. There was [a since-removed 2013 Entertainment Weekly] interview I gave where I said, 'Why can’t Peter explore his bisexuality in his next film? Why can't [his girlfriend] MJ be a guy?'" "I was then put under a lot of pressure to retract that and apologise for saying something that is a legitimate thing to think and feel," he continued. "So I said, 'OK, so you want me to make sure that we get the bigots and the homophobes to buy their tickets?'" In 2023, Garfield was photographed on a yacht having sunscreen applied by a male friend, which left people wondering if the two were romantically involved. (There are a lot of reasons to wonder about Andrew Garfield's sexuality, but fellas, you can apply sunscreen to another guy without it being a gay thing, we promise.)
