“Your actions are causing a bad reputation for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP),”Mayor Sharadamma told Madhava Hytech — the contractors for the bridge being constructed over a Storm Water Drain on new BEL bridge. Carrying out an inspection on Monday to see the progress of works on the bridge, she accompanied by local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ashwath Narayan and Dasarahalli legislator Muniraju, said that the construction should have been completed within the deadline. Threatening to black list the company, she took the contractors to task for not being able to complete the projects on time. Complaining that their ‘inaction’ was taking a toll on the reputation of the Palike, she said, “Contractors make the lowest bidding only to bag the tender. After this, they are unsure of completion of the project and hence cause delays and add to the inconvenience of the public”.The project, undertaken at a cost of `228.55 lakh, was given its work code on July 4, 2009 and was due to be completed by February 2011. Since the same was not complete and the density of traffic had grown in the locality considerably, Sharadamma lambasted the contractors and the officials for failing to adhere to deadlines. She directed the contractor to complete the work within a week and also insisted that all works including asphalting should be completed before the bridge was thrown open to traffic. She said that any further delay would lead to action against the contractor. She also said that the contractors would be blacklisted as many of their undertaken projects had not been completed and as a result the BBMP was being subjected to ‘ridicule’. She shared that the other projects undertaken by the company, such as the Kadrenahalli underpass, CNR Rao Circle had also been delayed due to their inaction and had caused inconvenience to the public. Sharadamma also instructed officials to be more careful while awarding tenders in the future. She said that they must ensure that contractors are able to complete the task on time, without compromising on quality, when they are awarded the tenders.
