Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Sunday chalked out a plan to set up a joint action committee with public representatives and local bodies' members across the country to raise its protest against the proposed National Commission for Human Resources for Health (NCHRC) Bill. It has also decided to make representations to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi over the issue soon.
Speaking at the IMA National Leadership Meet here, Dr N Appa Rao, chairman of the IMA National Leaders Forum, strongly opposed the Planing Commission's draft of private health care which will be made public in a month.
Rao said privatisation of the health care system will affect the poorest of the poor in the country. It will be equal to denial of health services to poor people, he added. "The draft is neither doctor-friendly nor beneficial to patients. We will go on an indefinite strike if the Commission does not scrap it,” he said. Rao said the IMA also condemns the other proposed bills such as the Clinical Establishment Act and the Bachelor of Rural Health and Care (BRHC). National secretary-general of the IMA Dr D Rai announced that they will launch awareness programmes in rural areas across the country in coordination with its state bodies. The joint action committee will have young doctors, public representatives and members of the government and NGOs, he added.
"In a couple of weeks, we will launch a one-day dharna in front of the Parliament House and indefinite dharnas at all the district headquarters,” he said. State president of IMA Dr V Prasad and secretaries of IMA state-level bodies also attended the meeting.
