New Delhi: The awards season is upon us and this is the time when the best of Indian cinema is judged, reviewed rewarded for entertaining us in the past year. 2013 has seen a mixed bag of films comprising both popular and art house cinema. In our maiden initiative, we have selected nominees in various popular categories and will let our readers decide the outcome. It is a month long poll, so go ahead and vote for your favourite performers of 2013.
These are the nominees in the Best Screenplay category:
Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox): Almost everything depends on the writing when you are making a film with only two principal characters and one supporting character. In addition to this, you also need to maintain the flow because the story doesn't give you the benefit of songs and item numbers. Basically, everything is about characterisation and how it comes out on the screen. The chemistry between two people who haven't met in their life! But, Batra does it that too in style.
Vipul Vig, Mrighdeep Singh Lamba (Fukrey): Unlike 'The Lunchbox', this one had a huge gathering of actors. It seems easy to create comic situation with so many actors talking at the same time, but the truth is exactly opposite. How would you fit five characters in a sequence that has someone else (Bholi Panjaban) at the dominating position? One needs to find at least 20 different personality traits and then place them into four separate individuals which means the research would have taken a lot of time, and the writers would have to live with their characters for a longer than normal period. Well, the hard work reflected in the film.
Sameer Gautam Singh, Apurva Asrani, Hansal Mehta (Shahid): First of all why 'Shahid' is in this list? The answer is very simple, it's an important story. But, was that enough? Certainly no, because when you make a film then you also need to imagine it as a collage of visuals which can keep the audience glued to their seats. 'Shahid' was watched and appreciated by all kinds of audiences and that happened due to smart writing by the trio.
Pubali Chaudhari, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Kapoor, Chetan Bhagat (Kai Po Che): The story was set in Ahmedabad and revolved around three friends who were innocent, but were becoming more aware of the fast changing situation around them. The book on which the film was based took the liberty of moving from one scene to another at a leisurely pace, but all those sequences had to be confined within a limited space on screen. The characterisation done by Chetan Bhagat would have helped them, but the cinematic sensibilities were brought in by the screen writers only.
Neeraj Udhwani, Pooja Desai, Ashima Chibber (Mere Dad Ki Maruti): What a quirky film it was. From 'Chandigarh ki Shakira' to a 'Superhero in the local bus', it was full of characters that were lively, outstanding and simple. The film easily got associated with the common middle class man. And, it also placed some advertisements in the most hilarious yet believable way.
