Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Traffic police is all set to get more eyes and ears, figuratively speaking. About 155 new surveillance cameras are going to be installed in different parts of the city in the next two months. Currently, the traffic police has 200 PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras at different signal points. They work round-the-clock.
Besides, the police also has 10 automated red signal violation capture cameras at 10 important locations. According to PVS Ramakrishna, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic), the cameras have been extremely beneficial in monitoring and managing traffic movement, spotting traffic violations and solving criminal cases.
“We have live video footage, images and digital photographs of events at various junctions. We also provide images to the law and order department. Images and video footage are strong evidence. No one can deny them,” he pointed out. The PTZ cameras also come in handy in case of processions, rallies, public meetings etc.
The traffic police has recently produced a film – a collection of recordings of accidents – to counsel traffic violators. The 10 automated red signal violation capture cameras can take three shots in a second.
“These cameras get activated when the signal is red and once, someone jumps the signal, they snap images and record footage,” said M Narsing Rao, inspector and head, computer section, HTP. “We also have about 500-odd traffic staff with digital (point and shoot) cameras at important junctions. Nearly about 3000 E-challans are generated on an average,” added the inspector.
10 cameras were first installed in the city in 2008 and now, the number has increased but still, the police need more. Currently, the HTP with just 1500-odd staff monitors the traffic movement of nearly 20 lakh vehicles in a city with over 7 million population!
