Laapataa Ladies revolves around two brides who get exchanged during a train journey. Made under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, it marked the directorial comeback of Kiran Rao.

Actor turned politician Ravi Kishan is ‘very happy’ as Laapataa Ladies has become India’s official entry to Oscars 2025. Kishan, who played the role of a police officer in Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan’s film, shared that it is his first film in 34 years which is going to compete for an Academy Award.

“I am very happy; I can’t believe it. For the first time in my 34-year career, a film I worked in is going to the Oscars,” Kishan said, as quoted by Free Press Journal.

“This film represents India, and now the world will see how 80 per cent of our villages and rural areas are progressing. This film showcases how daughters fight for their dreams, which really touched me,” the actor added.

Earlier today, Pratibha Ratna, who played Jaya Singh in the film, also called this feat an ‘invitation to international viewers’ to experience the brilliance of Indian cinema. “I’m beyond excited that ‘Lapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars! This film holds a special place in my heart, especially my character, Jaya,” she told News18 Showsha.

“I believe the story beautifully resonates with audiences worldwide, showcasing themes of love, loss, and the search for individuality. It’s a celebration of our culture and an invitation to international viewers to experience the richness of Indian storytelling. I’m grateful to be part of such an important project!” the actress added.

Laapataa Ladies takes viewers back to rural India in 2001. Its narrative revolves around two brides who get exchanged during a train journey. The journey filled with twists and turns begins as their husbands start searching for the real bride.

Made under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, Laapataa Ladies marked the directorial comeback of Kiran Rao after Dhobi Ghat. Before its theatrical release, the film was screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023. It received a standing ovation from the audience present at the festival.
