New Delhi: Matia Mahal is a prominent landmark of Delhi and an Assembly constituency. Matia Mahal is situated near Chandni Chowk and faces the twin problems of encroachment and illegal construction.

The area has witnessed several accidents due to illegal constructions and footpaths have disappeared due to encroachment. Even though Matia MAhal has very narrow bylanes but the residents have constructed five-six storey houses without clearance from the civic authorities.

Many buildings have collapsed due to the use of poor material used during construction. The collapse of a building Chandni Mahal in which many people were killed point to the nexus between unscrupulous builders and civic agency officials. Questions are also being raised about local MLA Shoaib Iqbal and why has he not been able to stop illegal constructions.

Pramod Jain, a local businessman, says that builders neither use proper material or take permission from civic authorities as they want to make huge profits. Such building will collapse, he says.

Local councilor Seema Tahira says that no community centre has been constructed in the area in the five years. The other big problem of the area is overflowing sewer lines. She alleges that officials are hand in glove with the builders and take no interest in solving the problems of the area.

BJP leader Yogendra Sharma says that all the lane are residential as per MCD records. Despite that illegal constructions take place with the help of civic authorities. Local residents also faces problems due to the numerous shops and factories which are operating in the narrow lanes.

Many of the buildings are in bad conditions and even historical buildings are being neglected. A building near Chudiwalan road are witness of our India's prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru 'baraat' stayed at a building near Chudiwalan road, but now it is in a very bad and neglected state.
