New Delhi: Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday reviewed the de-silting work of drains in different parts of the city, ahead of monsoon. Seven teams, led by the Lt Governor, left the Raj Niwas at 3 PM to carry out inspections in different parts of Delhi.

They covered several districts such as South, North, East, West, Central, South East, North East, South West, North West, and Shahdara, the officials said. Jung also inspected the Barapullah Drain, which falls under the South DMC. He visited various locations, namely, Sarai Kale Khan, Nizamuddin, Lodi Road and Taimur Nagar and issued on the spot instructions to accompanying officials.

"Flooding is a serious issue for Delhi. While this is a visit ahead of the monsoon, the city needs a comprehensive plan to develop a robust sewerage system in Delhi," Jung said. He stressed the need to connect storm water drains with effluent plants, so that only clean water goes into the Yamuna.

This should become part of the Yamuna Redevelopment plan for the city, the Lt Governor said. The teams inspected the drains which fall under the command of Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Public Works Department, South DMC, and East DMC. A total of 11 sites were inspected till late evening, the officials said.

The Lt Governor will lead another round of inspections on the June 19 as part of efforts to try and ensure that Delhi residents face minimal water logging issues during the coming monsoon season. The sites include Hari Nagar Drain (from Ghanta Ghar to Central Jail); Roadside drainage system on Aurobindo Marg (before AIIMS till SFS Flats Hauz Khas); Burari Creek Drain (from Burari Transport Authority to Kamal Vihar); Burari Main Drain (Bakhtawarpur to Burari Road drain); Najafgarh Drain (Rawta-Kakrola stretch); Nala Samalkha, near the Airport; and Sultanpur Drain etc.

There were mixed reports received from the field as while certain drains such as the Hari Nagar were more choked than the others, others such as the Burari Creek Drain showed considerable improvement. There was linkage work going on in drains at the Aurobindo Marg, which is an area given to flooding. It was instructed that the work be expedited.

Work was going on at the Shahdara Outfall drain, but the officers informed that de-silting being a continuous process, the work was still on. The Najafgarh drain at the Rawta-Kakrola stretch though clean, did have water hyacinths growing, which have been instructed to be removed.

At Karala in the Sultanpur drain, Malba was found lying around and the culvert was found to be choked. Instructions have been passed to the concerned agencies based on the visit, the officials added.
