KOCHI: The district administration will soon get a ‘Manveedu,’ a mud house, inside the civil station. MLA Benny Behnan inaugurated the stone-laying ceremony at the civil station, Kakkanad, on Thursday. The idea is to bring back the traditional style of house construction under the limelight. District Collector, who presided over the function, said that the construction of the mud house will be completed within a month. This new building which will be located close to the northern gate of the civil station will house the akshaya centre and the railway counter, which are now functioning inside the civil station.District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth said that once the ‘manveedu’ is opened, the ordinary tickets will also be available here alongside the reservation tickets in the railway counter. Besides, the working hours of the railway counter will be extended to 8.30 pm. Now it is functioning only till evening owing to security reasons,” Pareeth said. It was earlier decided to build this mud house in an area of about 355 square feet. But it has been changed to 600 square feet. “The mud house will be built in an area of 600 square feet so that we would be able to accommodate more facilities if such a need arises,” he said. The significant features of these types of mud houses are that they are cost effective and eco-friendly. This enterprise would only cost about `750 for every square feet. Whereas, other houses would cost around `1500- 1700 per square feet. This is also an attempt from the district administration to show public that such mud houses are very effective. Collector said that the mud house with all the required facilities can be built with a minimal amount of `3 lakh. The ‘manveedu’ will have two counters, corridors, public restrooms and other facilities. The mud house is designed by Joshi Cheriyan.
