Citizens took to the streets and blocked roads in protest against long power cuts in the city, which have affected several areas in Kanpur, police said on Monday.
Residents of Hanspuram last night, staged a protest first at Naubasta sub-station and then they blocked the Barra bypass road, they said. People were protesting after three sub-stations were closed last night due to technical in Hanspuram area, due to which power supply was affected to thousands of people living in Kidwai Nagar, Yashoda Nagar Saket Nagar among others. Protests on the bypass also halted traffic in the area, which was relieved late night after much effort.
According to the electricity department, about two dozen transformers have malfunctioned due to high demand of power in the last few days, leading to power cuts. Though the power cuts are happening for two hours in the morning and four hours in the evening, some areas are facing longer cuts of up to 10 hours, the department said.
Opposition parties too have been attacking the ruling SP over the issue. There are five legislators from Samajwadi Party in the city and two among them ministers, being but even then there are transformer faults and other problems are taking place. Due to 10-12 hour power cuts, businessmen and the common man both are suffering, Congress district head, Mahesh Dikshit, said.
