New Delhi The CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu on Sunday rejected the Trinamool Congress main demand for the return of land of "unwilling" farmers at Singur.
"The return of the land at Singur is not possible at the moment because of the legal complications and also because of the fact that Tatas have already started the project work at the site", PTI quoted Basu as saying.
He said that the Trinamool Congress chief "must be aware of these legal complexities".
Trinamool Congress Mamata Banerjee, however, insisted that the land of the unwilling farmers at the Tata Motors project site be returned forthwith. She claimed that Basu had agreed to her demand during their talks on June 4.
Mamata said that she would not sit with the Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for talks on Singur issue.
"We will not negotiate with the chief minister who is responsible for killing of farmers in Nandigram", she said.
Basu, however, said, "An alternative compensation arrangement was being worked out for those who lost land and the Industry Minister Nirupam Sen has already prepared a note on this. Sen had discussed the issue with me and the note would be made available to me tomorrow."
Basu's comments came a week after his meeting with Mamata Banerjee when both expressed their confidence on reaching an amicable settlement of the issues.
