Manchester: Manchester United are finalising a British record deal for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria. The reports in England and Spain say Di Maria will join Manchester United in a British record transfer - after rivals Manchester City turned down the chance to sign him.
United will pay Real Madrid £60 million for the Argentina winger and they have also agreed to stump up another £ 7m in add-ons. The deal will shatter the current British record of £50 million paid by Chelsea to Liverpool in January 2011 for Fernando Torres.
United have been working on a deal for the Real Madrid star for the past month and reports revealed that they have offered him a £200,000-a-week incentivised package to compensate for the fact that they cannot offer him Champions League football this season.
In addition to the fee, it is believed there are add-ons which amount to another £ 8m. Now it is understood that Di Maria has told United he will come and sources indicated that the club was making progress in terms of agreeing a fee with Madrid.
The 26-year-old has already spoken with United manager Louis van Gaal about his proposed role and he is expected to be handed the iconic No. 7 shirt at Old Trafford.
