Bayern Munich’s 1-0 defeat against Lazio in the UEFA Champions League has seen them attain multiple unwanted records on the night. Playing at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy, Bayern were struggling to get a hold of the game. They soon fell victim to a 69th penalty from Ciro Immobile while failing to score a goal of their own.
Following the defeat, a football page on Instagram suggested that this was the first time in 11 years that Bayern had conceded a defeat in the first leg of the Champions League. This was also their first-ever defeat to an Italian club in 13 years. While Bayern couldn’t score a goal on the night, they even failed to register a single shot on target in the game. This was the first time they failed to register a single shot on target since their 0-0 game against Liverpool in the 2018/19 season.

Bayern Munich looked promising in the opening few minutes of their Champions League knockout tie. They pressed the Italians high while creating multiple chances for Harry Kane, Leroy Sane and Joshua Kummich in the first half. All three players missed their chances. They had 17 shots in the game but none of those efforts were made on the target. Bayern will now have a lot of work to do if they want to put themselves in contention for European glory once again.
A dejected Harry Kane spoke to TNT Sports after the game and said, “Really tough week. In the first half, we started well and had clear chances, one for myself.” He then talked about how the second half was more disappointing and how going a man down complicated things. “We came out with less energy and less confidence. We got punished. Once you go down to 10 men it’s always difficult,” he said.
Despite the setback, Kane remained hopeful about the team figuring out the solution by themselves. He said, “We have to find it among ourselves. We’re still in the race for the Bundesliga and still in this tie, we have to keep fighting.”
On the other hand, manager Thomas Tuchel said that he was more frustrated at the ongoing situation than being worried about his future at Bayern Munich. “Worried about my future? No, I am not. We’re frustrated and angry about the defeat. I think we lost the game, I’m not sure Lazio won it,” Tuchel said
Lazio had lost 6-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich three years ago in the Round of 16 stage of the UEFA Champions League. The Italians now have the perfect opportunity to avenge themselves by taking down Bayern in their next tie.
