The Range Rover Velar is meant to fill the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, and will launch in India on 20 January, 2018.

Jaguar Land Rover had unveiled the Velar SUV in March 2017 as the fourth addition to the Range Rover family. The Velar was also expected to fill the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. The Range Rover Velar will launch in India on 20 January, 2018.

The Velar is the latest SUV by the JLR family and sports the latest when it comes to design language and onboard technology features.

The Range Rover Velar’s design follows neat lines throughout the body and sports full-LED headlights which give the Velar a standout look. The car has received ample attention to detail especially when it comes to elements like the deployable door handles which help the SUV in being the most aerodynamically-efficient Land Rover ever produced, with a drag coefficient of only 0.32.

The minimalistic and clean approach continues on the inside of the car as well as the use of buttons have been kept to a minimum. It has the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system which is the centrepiece of Velar’s interior. It features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens which are integrated and are used to operate features like the infotainment system and the air-con controls.

When it comes to safety, the Velar comes with six airbags, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems including Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist and an Adaptive Speed Limiter.

The Velar also comes with an all-wheel-drive system, four-corner air suspension, a ground clearance of 251mm (213mm with coil springs), wading depth of 650mm (600mm with coil springs) and Land Rover’s suite of traction technologies including Terrain Response 2 and All-Terrain Progress Control.

When it comes to the heart of the Velar, there is a range of six petrol and diesel powertrains which were announced, all matched to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics.

The four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines are offered in 180 PS and 240 PS variants, with a torque output of 500 Nm. These engines are joined by the new, four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine which delivers 250 PS of power resulting in a 0-100km/h dash time of 6.7 seconds. The 380 PS supercharged V6 petrol engine reduces the 100km/h time to just 5.7 seconds and is capable of attaining an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

Note that these are the specifications that were announced at the global unveiling of the Range Rover Velar. It still remains to be seen as to which of these features and powertrain options make their way to India and at which price tags. Watch this space for updates.
