YouTuber Faces Hate For Questioning American Tipping Culture: ‘Unbelievable’
YouTuber who called America’s tipping culture a scam, claims he received most hateful messages from Americans and Indian Americans.

YouTuber Ishan Sharma has been attracting attention since he landed in the United States of America. He has been highlighting several cultural shocks he came across. Sharma, who’s currently in New York, recently criticised the American tipping culture on X and called it a scam. His opinion quickly went viral and garnered several strong reactions. In a follow up tweet, Sharma posted screenshots of the hateful messages he received from not just Americans but also Indian Americans who are offended with his opinion. In his tweet, Sharma admitted that he previously believed racism just existed in movies. He said that he faced real life discrimination, just for raising his voice against the flawed system.

In the messages, many criticised Sharma, called him cheap and suggested him to go back to India. The content creator wrote, “The result of sharing my opinion and asking a question: Hundreds of Americans and Indian Americans DMing me the most hateful messages. Racism. I thought it only existed in their movies and TV shows. Until today. All for asking a question? Unbelievable.”

Reacting to the post, a user noted, “You are getting hate simply because they’re too arrogant that an Indian questioned their broken system.”

Another shared, “If they troll you, just ask them their gender pronouns. Let them figure out that first.”

“Racism against Indian, Hindu and Brown people is normalised on the internet. This situation becomes worse when we see Indians colonized by Western mindset join these racists,” a comment read.

Another person said, “You raised a valid point which people couldn’t digest. I’m sure they too feel the same about tipping but looking cool on Social Media on someone else’s expense suits their useless lives.”

An individual shared, “All these guys cannot even afford a proper meal, let alone tipping 15-20%. Ignore them. You were right about tipping culture here in the states. It’s borderline extortion.”

One more added, “This kinda hatred (that too in dms), is stupid and too toxic imho. I guess just another way anon accounts get their frustration out.”

In a previous X post, Ishan Sharma revealed when he ordered a crepe, club sandwich and panini for $45 (approximately Rs 3,800) and paid $50 (approximately Rs 4,000), the waitress kept the extra $5 (approximately Rs 400) as a tip. When Sharma questioned if tipping was mandatory, the server simply ignored him.

Since the content creator shared his opinion on X, it has garnered over 51 million views.
