We have often come across the phrase, ‘love is blind.’ Recently, one such love story has been gaining attention on the internet. A man named Mart Soeson born in Estonia, Europe is 48 years old. He fell in love with 104-year-old Elfriede Riit, who happens to be his step grandmom, who lives in Australia. According to reports, Mart Soeson is a lawyer by profession. He said in a recent media interaction that he has been in a relationship with this elderly woman since 2013, after the death of his grandfather. They lived together until 2022, after which Riit was forced to move into a nursing home. According to the Daily Mail of the UK, Riit, who was also born in Estonia. She was the 2nd wife of Mart Soeson’s grandfather. Mart shared that their 55-year age gap is irrelevant and they should be allowed to continue their “exclusive, committed long-term” romance.
Mart further said, initially, they started out to bond generally; but with time, slowly, their bond started to grow stronger. Eventually, it developed into a really meaningful and loving relationship. Now there is no going back; both of them only want to enjoy their loving moments. According to reports, Mart wants to get permanent residency in Australia on the basis of their relationship, but his visa application has been cancelled.
Further, he was also not formally told the reason why that visa application was rejected. But it is believed that the Department of Home Affairs was suspicious about the legitimacy of his relationship with the woman.
Now, Marthas has taken his case to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, which he attended on Wednesday with Elfriede Riit, and three supporters to have the matter heard.
Although tSoeson also shared about his first meeting with Ms Riit, which was in early 1996. For the first time, he came to Australia to study advanced English, and it was a great moment. Ms Riit knew Mart as her late husband’s grandchild and asked him to stay at her Sydney house.
He further shared that it was not love at first sight, and nothing happened overnight. But from the first meeting, they became friends, and that connection grew. Mart, after completing his course, returned to Estonia but came back to Australia on holidays in 2000 and 2007 to meet Ms Riit. During these two trips, their bond grew stronger.
