When you are out partying, on a trip with friends, or sharing a flat with roommates, what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you want to divide expenses? For most of us, it is Splitwise. It has been the quintessential app that most resort to when dividing expenses, and rightly so, considering the feature set it brings to the table and the polished user interface that users have grown to appreciate.
However, the app has notably added limits to how many expenses you can add in a day for free and introduced a 10-second cooldown before you can add an expense.
We checked this update for ourselves and found the same; however, we could add a maximum of 4 expenses in one go, unlike the 3 that many other users have reported. Also, we did encounter the 10-second cooldown on both Android and iOS platforms. This was checked using two separate accounts. Notably, Splitwise also acknowledges the same on its website.
The addition of these features behind a paywall is understandably a bid to push users towards buying Splitwise Pro, which lets you add unlimited expenses, convert currencies, scan receipts, and more. Users can subscribe to it for Rs 149 per month or choose to pay Rs 999 yearly. In the US, the same costs $5 per month or $40 yearly.
This has certainly caused frustration for long-time Splitwise users and may have even pushed them away. We came across a plethora of users on X (formerly known as Twitter), expressing their angst about this unwelcome change. “Happy holidays for everyone except Splitwise who thought it is a good idea to make a daily limit for expense input,” a user who goes by the username afusa_ said on X.
Many others said that they were looking for alternatives: “Any alternatives for Splitwise? Mark my words your downfall has started @\splitwise. 5$ every month to do division addition subtraction and multiplication, nah, that’s why I went to primary school,” user @speedster_se7en said.

Now that you can’t add as many expenses as you want for free, we have curated a list of free and paid alternatives that users can use to split expenses with whomever they like. They are as follows.
Splitwise Alternatives You Can Use:
Splitkaro
This made-in-India app is a great alternative to Splitwise and offers functionality including splitting bills online, managing household spends, and it even lets you import all your data from Splitwise so that you can easily migrate without having to resort to Splitwise to refer to old transactions. It is available for free on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and, most importantly, imposes no restrictions on the number of expenses that you can add daily. We also found the UI functional and easy to use.
PhonePe, Google Pay
A lot of people in India now use UPI-based apps like Google Pay and PhonePe to make payments. These apps now also have expense splitting features. While they aren’t dedicated expense splitting apps, they do offer a good amount of features for free.
SplitMyExpenses
This is a web-only experience for now that you can access on your phone, but unlike Splitwise, it makes features like uploading receipts and adding as many expenses as you like completely free of cost. You can split expenses equally, by amount, percentage, shares, adjustments, or by itemization. Plus, you can even add or invite friends from payment apps.
Settle Up – Group Expenses
This is another alternative to Splitwise, and it doesn’t even need every group member to download the app. You can add as many expenses as you want, but there’s a basic tradeoff: you need to watch ads every once in a while. But considering it is free, with an option to go ad-free with a one-time payment of Rs 3,999, it offers a balanced experience with a minimalist UI.
