NEP an ‘Amazing’ Policy That Can Encourage Internationalisation of Higher Education: Ex-ISRO Chief at RSS Event

Former ISRO chairperson K Radhakrishnan on Saturday lauded the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, calling it an “amazing” and transformative step in the right direction for higher education.

The Padma Bhushan-awardee scientist was invited as the chief guest of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) Vijayadashami event, which is an annual celebration by the Sangh at its headquarters in Nagpur.

Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan, who was flanked by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, also said: “The older generation is now mentoring the younger generation to make the Bharatiya Space Station by 2040.”

Emphasising that the new policy is driving a much-needed transition, particularly in higher education in India, he said: “NEP is fostering an environment that encourages internationalisation of Indian education. I have noticed that many Indian educational institutions have opened campuses abroad. It is broadening the global reach of India’s education system, which is fantastic.”

Calling NEP an effort by the government to take higher education towards the “positive” direction, Radhakrishnan also pointed out the NEP’s strong focus on building a robust research ecosystem. With significant attention on innovation and research, the policy is set to boost India’s standing in global academia and technology, aligning with the country’s ambitions to lead in scientific advancements, he added.

The NEP has faced criticism from opposition parties and sections of the intelligentsia, who have accused it of pushing a “saffronisation” agenda. However, Radhakrishnan highlighted its positive impact on the future of Indian education.

With an emphasis on encouraging innovation, he added that the policy motivates Indian universities to strengthen their research capabilities, helping them to compete globally in fields like science and technology. Radhakrishnan specifically mentioned “anusandhan research foundation”, recognising the policy’s role in elevating India’s research institutions and advancing its scientific pursuits. The former ISRO chairperson’s endorsement of the NEP comes at a time when debates over its alleged political leanings continue to persist.
