The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) for the year 2024 has seen an unprecedented surge in participant numbers, breaking records compared to the previous year. According to a report by Times Of India, the January session alone witnessed a registration of 12.3 lakh aspirants, surpassing the combined registration for both January and April 2023 by nearly 68,000. In contrast to the first session of the 2023 examination, there has been a substantial increase of 3.7 lakh aspirants in the current year.
Candidates should note that the first session of the JEE for admission to undergraduate (UG) engineering and architecture/planning programmes is planned to take place between January 24 and February 1, 2024. Moreover, the registration process for the April session will be re-opened thereafter. In addition to that, the results for the January 2024 session will be declared on February 12, 2024.
In terms of state-wise registrations, Maharashtra maintains its lead with 1.6 lakh aspirants, followed closely by Andhra Pradesh with 1.3 lakh students and Telangana with 1.2 lakh candidates. Notably, all three states are set to witness a substantial increase in the number of aspirants compared to the JEE (Main) 2023 examination. In 2023, Maharashtra had 1.3 lakh registrations, Andhra Pradesh had 1 lakh, and Telangana had 95,000 registrations.
When it comes to gender-wise registrations, female representations have also marginally improved at over 33 per cent of the total for JEE (Main) 2024, up from 30.8 per cent in 2023. The test also registered the highest number of enrollments in the third gender at 19 per cent.
The JEE (Main) 2024 will take place in 13 languages, namely- English, Hindi, Urdu. Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Assamese, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Odia.
In terms of language-wise registrations, the number of aspirants in English continues to rise, surpassing the 11 lakh mark, while the number of examinees in Hindi medium has fallen to roughly 40,000. Gujarati records the third-highest number of 16,731 test takers.
The Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main), is conducted by the National Testing Agency for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate (UG) courses in top institutes in India. The test consists of two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is conducted for admission to UG Engineering Programmes (BE/BTech) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, and universities or institutions funded or recognised by participating state governments. Paper 2 is conducted for admission to the BArch and BPlanning courses in the country. JEE (Main) is also an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced) examination, which is held for admission to IITs.
