In Bollywood, it is quite a common phenomenon where stars strive to ensure the success of their children in the film industry. Either by producing their debut film or by pulling their strings and getting them signed in a film. One such superstar father is Rajendra Kumar who has delivered several hits, but reportedly failed to establish his son, Kumar Gaurav’s career. As per reports, the reasons for the failure of his son’s acting career is that he did not approve of his son’s choice of woman for marriage and he prevented Kumar Gaurav from working with her, which ultimately led to the downfall of Phool actor. Can you guess who the actress is?
Kumar Gaurav marked his debut in Bollywood with the film Love Story, which also starred his father. It was also Vijayta Pandit’s, the sister of musical duo- Jatin-Lalit, first film. Their on-screen love bloomed into a real-life love story. However, Rajendra Kumar did not support their relationship. As a result, he made sure that Vijayta was ousted from all the films. As per reports, the duo were a huge hit and created a stir in the industry after their first film and the audience wanted to see them together. His father tried to pair him with other leading actresses of the time, but none of Kumar Gaurav’s films worked.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Vijayta Pandit opened up about her love story with Kumar Gaurav and how it caused her career to end as well. She shared that they fell in love on the sets of Love Story and despite Kumar Gaurav’s engagement to Raj Kapoor’s daughter, Reema Kapoor, he wanted to marry Vijayta. She also mentioned how Ramanand Sagar had plans to work with her on a film titled Romance but was replaced by Poonam Dhillon. The actress added that she shot for ten days on a film called Rahi in Goa. However, she claimed that Rajendra Kumar got her removed from the film.
Vijayta Pandit shared, “Rajendra ji got me removed from all the films. He is the main person who didn’t let me work with Bunty (Kumar Gaurav). All the producers would say they want to cast Bunty and me; it is a hit pair. But Rajendra ji would say, ‘Heroine se picture nahi banti hai (a film doesn’t become a hit because of a heroine), it is a hit because of the hero.’ He would suggest other actresses like Poonam Dhillon, Padmini Kolhapure, and Rati Agnihotri instead.”
She further added that Rajendra Kumar continued making attempts to ensure his son’s successful career in the industry and made films with the top actresses, but they still failed. Finally, he decided to cast Madhuri Dixit, who charged high fees at that time, for the film Phool with Kumar Gaurav. The Sasural actor invested all the money he made from Love Story, but the film flopped at the box office.
After her relationship with Kumar Gaurav ended, actress Vijayta Pandit tied the knot to singer Aadesh Srivastava in 1990. The singer passed away in 2015. He is survived by his wife and two children.
