The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged higher educational institutions to raise awareness about Constitution Day 2023, encouraging students’ participation in related events. Constitution Day, observed on November 26 in India, commemorates the adoption of the Constitution as part of the Union of India.
As part of the celebrations, UGC Secretary Professor Manish R Joshi highlighted the significance of reading the Preamble to reaffirm commitment to constitutional ideals. He said that the institutions can also utilise the MyGov portal to participate in the online ‘Read the Preamble’ initiative and download certificates. The UGC encourages organising talks, webinars and other activities on Constitutional values and the fundamentals of the Indian Constitution.
“An important part of the celebration is reading the Preamble to the Constitution and reaffirming our commitment to uphold its ideology. A provision has also been made on the MyGov portal to ‘Read the preamble’ online and download a certificate. Other activities including talks/ webinars on Constitutional values and fundamentals of the Indian Constitution may also be organised,” Professor Joshi wrote in a letter addressed to Vice Chancellors of aII universities and the principals of all affiliated colleges/institutes.
The letter further reads, “The Higher Education Institutions are requested to organise the activities relating to the Celebration of Constitution Day in a befitting manner.” In addition to this, the other details, including photos and videos of the events taking place, should be uploaded on the University Activity Monitoring Portal (UAMP) at uamp.ugc.ac.in.
Talking about the previous year’s Constitution Day event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced his presence at the Supreme Court, where Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also addressed attendees. Many colleges also organised events, with students pledging their commitment to the principles outlined in the preamble.
Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is observed on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. After gaining independence from British Rule, the Constituent Assembly, chaired by Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and led by Dr Rajendra Prasad, drafted the constitution. Dr Ambedkar completed the draft in 1948, which was adopted on November 26, 1949, with subsequent amendments. The Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950.
