It’s a rare occurrence for a film to gross more than Rs 1000 crore at the box office and still be deemed a failure, but that’s exactly what happened with The Matrix Resurrections three years ago. Despite its impressive earnings, the film was widely considered a disappointment. The original Matrix trilogy is a dose of nostalgia for all those who grew up in the 90s. The concept of the world around you actually being a simulated reality was something absolutely new when The Matrix came out in 1999. It became a rage among science fiction enthusiasts and the film was quickly followed by two more sequels, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions.
Twenty years later, Keanu Reeves returned to his iconic role of Neo in The Matrix Resurrections, but this time the box office did not favour him. The Matrix Resurrections was released in theatres amid the Covid pandemic. Apart from this, the film received mixed reviews. At the same time, the film’s business was also affected due to poor word of mouth. You will be surprised to know that The Matrix Resurrections was made on a budget of 190 million dollars, that is Rs 1450 crore. After its release, The Matrix Resurrections could not even recover its cost at the box office. The film did a business of Rs 1210 crore worldwide. It is interesting to note that Priyanka Chopra played an important role in the film. She portrayed the grown up version of the character Sati, who was introduced in Matrix Revolutions as a child.
Although The Matrix Resurrections was deemed a box office failure, it turned out to be the highest grosser in Priyanka Chopra’s career. The high budget of the film contributed largely to the box office failure of the film.
Keanu Reeves is among the highest-paid actors in the industry. For his role in John Wick 4, released in 2023, he commanded a fee of 25 million dollars, equivalent to approximately Rs 200 crore. This amount surpasses the fees of Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.
