Anne Hathaway’s latest film, The Idea of You, adapted from Robinne Lee’s best selling novel, has stirred curiosity for its intriguing premise. Despite speculation that it is inspired by the life of Harry Styles, the author has debunked these claims in multiple interviews. While Lee has claimed that the character is the inspiration of various personalities, including Styles, Prince Harry and Eddie Redmayne, Nicholas Galitzine, who plays the lead role, chose to distance himself from comparisons with the former One Direction star. Galitzine highlighted that his character Hayes Campbell is not influenced by Styles but shared that it is a blend of other boy bands like the Backstreet Boys and BTS.
Speaking to People, Galitzine said, “I like to distance myself from that comparison because I think Hayes is his own character and has his own struggles and wants and tastes, even in who he is as a musician. We took tons of different references. I think the boy band as a whole was an amalgam of a lot of different artists and groups. I’d love people to come to watch the movie with an open mind and maybe become fans of August Moon individually as well. I mean, there’s some really, really catchy songs in the movie.”
Previously, Nicholas Galitzine indeed claimed that there was some inspiration from Harry Styles while developing his character Hayes Campbell. In an interview with Buzzfeed, he revealed that they aimed to create a character “akin to Styles,” especially in terms of his romantic connections with older women.
Shedding light on the actual inspirations behind his character in The Idea of You, Nicholas Galitzine told People that the early days of the Backstreet Boys and for choreography, the team took ideas from the popular K-pop sensation BTS. He explained that while the septet underwent intense training, he had limited time for preparation before filming. However, he aimed to capture BTS’ laid-back confidence and described it as cool. Talking about the experience of working on the project, the actor claims that it was an enjoyable process, particularly the positive atmosphere on set.
The Idea of You focuses on a 40-year-old single mother Solene, played by Anne Hathaway, who gets romantically linked with the 24-year-old frontman of the fictional boy band August Moon, Hayes Campbell, played by Nicholas Galitzine.
