Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic films. Released in 1992, the movie perfectly blends romance, friendship, family and sports drama in a way that feels fresh even today. Surprisingly, the film was embroiled in controversy during its early days, as majority of the portion was reshot due to the replacement of several team members. In a recent episode of Cyrus Broacha’s YouTube podcast, actor and director Deven Bhojani spilled the beans about behind the scenes drama. He spoke about replacing Farah Khan as the assistant director after filming had already begun. Many actors, including Milind Soman, were swapped due to various reasons after a month and a half of shooting.
The Baa Bahoo Aur Baby star said, “During Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, I was acting and then I also was assisting. When it started I was not but then Farah was assistant, then she got busy as a choreographer and then there was a place and then we shot the whole film again because after some 40-50% of shoot, we had to reshoot the whole thing because we replaced few of the artists. So Milind Soman was playing Deepak Tijori’s role, there was Karishma Pahuja, she was playing Puja Bedi’s role, Girija was playing Aisha Jhulka’s role. We shot one schedule about 1 and a half months or so in Ooty Kodaikanal and then we all came back and something happened."

According to Deven Bhojani, there were several reasons for the changes in the cast. Some actors had attitude problems, while others struggled to get along and a few simply had trouble waking up on time. “Sabka alag alag reason tha, kisi ke tantrum wala reason tha, kisi ka tuning nahi jama, kisi ka late uthne ka habit tha or whatever. Aise alag alag reason ke wajah se there were multiple replacement," he added.
Deven, who was involved in the film from the beginning, mentioned that he joined the team as an assistant director when the reshooting started. Aamir Khan encouraged him to take the role and was paid extra Rs 1000 per month. After Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was released, he received more acting offers, but most of them were the hero’s friends. He went on to act in around 20 to 25 films in similar types of roles.
According to earlier reports, Akshay Kumar was originally considered for the role of Shekhar Malhotra, the most popular student of Rajput College, in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. However, he did not impress the casting team during auditions. Later, Milind Soman was cast but even he was replaced and Deepak Tijori took over. Directed by Mansoor Khan, the film also featured Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Mamik Singh, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Pooja Bedi in key roles.
