You must have heard many times that an actor rejected a film because of low fees, but have you ever heard that an actor has turned down the most money an actor has ever been offered? Yes, you heard it right, an actor has rejected such a big offer. His name is Matt Damon. The Hollywood actor has had a successful acting career and is known for his prominent roles in Good Will Hunting, the Bourne franchise, Saving Private Ryan, Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
Here we are talking about a role he regrets turning down in the biggest film of all time. This matter is related to James Cameron’s popular film Avatar. This film was first offered to Matt Damon and he was also offered a huge fee, but he rejected it. The director was also offering him 10 per cent of the film’s profits if he took up the part. The actor was forced to reject the offer owing to a scheduling clash. The actor didn’t confirm the exact amount but reportedly he was offered around $250 million (Rs 2086 crore).
The actor recalled in an interview, “James Cameron offered me ten per cent of Avatar if I did it, but I was working on post-production for The Bourne Ultimatum.” In another interview, he said, “I’ve left more money on the table than any actor. Cameron said to me in the course of that conversation, Well, you know, I’ve only made six movies. I didn’t realise that … I realised in having to say no that I was probably passing on the chance to ever work with him. So that sucked and that’s still brutal.”
According to a report from Variety, Damon said, “I was in the middle of shooting the Bourne movie and I knew that we were going to need work at the end and I had to get it to the finish line and I would have to leave the movie kind of early and leave them in the lurch a little bit and I didn’t want to do that. I desperately wanted to work with Cameron. I mean, because he worked so rarely.”
After this, Sam Worthington was cast for the lead role in Avatar. Interestingly, Avatar emerged as the highest-grossing film worldwide after its release and garnered a worldwide collection of 2.9 billion dollars at the box office. If Damon had agreed to do the role, he would have received 10 per cent.
Recently, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon announced their collaboration for Netflix’s upcoming thriller feature titled RIP. It will be directed by Joe Carnahan and backed by Damon and Affleck’s production company, Artists Equity. The two will co-star in the upcoming film.
Let us tell you that Matt Damon made his debut in the year 1988 with the film Mystic Pizza. The actor is known for his franchises like Ocean’s Eleven, The Departed, Ford v Ferrari and many more. He has also been seen doing cameos in films like Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
