Amitabh Bachchan Told Jaya Bachchan She'd Have To Work Less To Marry Him: 'Don't Want A Wife Who...'
Amitabh Bachchan told Jaya Bachchan that he did not want a wife who would work every day.

Veteran actors Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan are among the most popular celebrity couples in Bollywood. Both actors are superstars in their own right. However, while Jaya was already a superstar when she met the actor, Amitabh became a big name after he started dating Jaya. The couple tied the knot in 1973 after dating for a while. But, Amitabh posed the condition that Jaya would have to reduce her work.

On her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast, What The Hell Navya, Jaya said, “We had decided we will marry in October because by then my work would have reduced. But he had told me, ‘I definitely don’t want a wife who will be 9 to 5. Please work, but not every day. You choose your projects and work with the right people’.”

Amitabh and Jaya tied the knot on June 3, 1973. The couple celebrated their 51st anniversary this year. Their marriage was an intimate affair and took place at Jaya’s Godmother’s house in Mumbai. While the wedding was supposed to take place in October, they had to move it ahead to June.

“We had to go on a trip after the success of the film we did together (Zanjeer). But one day, he called me and said, ‘There’s a problem. My parents won’t allow us to go on a holiday and if we want to go, we must get married.’ So I said we were already planning to get married in October, let’s get it done in June. But you will have to speak to my parents. He called my father, who was not very happy since he never wanted me to get married,” Jaya said. However, her father agreed, and the two got married in a simple ceremony.

While Amitabh Bachchan continued to work in massive blockbusters, Jaya took a back seat and looked after their kids, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan. Talking about this, Amitabh Bachchan mentioned at the India Today Conclave in 2014, “One thing I find very admirable about Jaya is that she chose to give preference to home and not films. There was no obstacle from me ever, it was her decision. In marriages, all decisions are taken by the wife.”

While Jaya Bachchan was recently seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Amitabh Bachchan is currently making waves after the release of Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD.
