Nicolas Ghesquière tapped into the pre-Olympics fever that is sweeping Rio de Janeiro this weekend with his athletic take on resort wear for Louis Vuitton's 2017 collection.

The French designer chose the futuristic Niterói Contemporary Art Museum for the show, channeling the building's billowing curves and oceanside location through a collection that was simultaneously sporty, dramatic and laid-back.

The body-con designs were adorned with splashy color block motifs that played with proportion and perspective. Scuba-style dresses featured cut-out detailing, wetsuit-like collars and longer-length side panels, with stripes and racing check patterns emphasizing the sporty undertones of the collection. Wide-lapelled jumpsuits with zips running down the torso and pockets tacked onto the legs added to the effect.

This being Vuitton, there was, of course, plenty of leather. Belted biker jackets with shearling collars worn oversized as dresses and royal blue jacket dresses with racing stripes once again referenced the Formula 1 vibe, while a studded batwing tunic brought gladiators to mind.

However, there was also softness in the collection, in the form of rippling windbreaker jackets and ruffled minidresses.

Slender sequined scarves added a dash of disco to the proceedings, while draped floral dresses layered over sparkly tank tops played on the lightness of the collection.

Yet there was nothing dainty about the strappy gladiator flip-flops and pointed pixie boots that marched purposefully down the catwalk against the backdrop of the sea.

What's your reaction?
