CHENNAI: ‘Awake, arise and plunge into action’ was the mass call given by Good Governance Guards (GGG), an organisation working on cooperation and governance issues, at a national conclave organised by them on Sunday as they launched their initiative to plant one crore trees.SS Radhakrishnan, retired bureaucrat and founder president of GGG, said, “Given the fact that our rulers are interested in exploiting people, and as India continues to remain underdeveloped even after 50 years of Independence, it is high time we citizens wake up and get to action. We cannot afford to stay idle and let our country of historic greatness regress into backwardness.”Followed by this curtain call, the GGG presented a few objectives on which they propose to act on a war footing. For fighting global warming and food scarcity, they are planning to plant one crore trees, mostly fruit bearing, and 10 lakh kitchen gardens in TN within the end of this year.Radhakrishnan said, “How many of us can afford to eat an apple a day? Having fruits in one’s daily diet is an impossible dream, given the prices. So we decided to launch this fruit bearing tree initiative. Saplings of papaya, mango and guava trees will be distributed by our volunteers to those who are interested.”On their kitchen garden initiative, he said, “How about having a few pots in your balcony and start with growing chillis and tomatoes and slowly graduate into other vegetables? I feel this is our own small contribution in fighting global warming and food scarcity.”Maximum utilisation of human resources is another objective. “Only after 21, a young person in our country starts contributing to the socio-economic growth. There are ways and means for these young people to contribute. Most housewives spent time watching TV serials at home. Most of them are educated who can be more productively used. The government can bring up schemes so that housewives can productively contribute to the economic growth. The same applies to the senior citizens.”Traffic KR Ramaswamy, veteran social activist, advised that it was not only important to raise issues but it was equally important to follow up till it was accomplished, however long it took. For details, call 9841023448, visit www.goodgoveranceguards.com and www.gggindia.com.
