THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: North-East Monsoon was vigorous in the state on Sunday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall were reported in several parts of the state. Varkala received 18 cm rainfall, the highest in the state. All the 21 Met stations reported good rainfall on Sunday. Wind, occasionally with a speed of 65 km per hour, hit the state and the sea remained rough on Sunday.A low-pressure area, which developed into depression on Saturday, was positioned over Amini Island in Lakshadweep on Sunday. The state will continue to experience heavy rainfall till Tuesday morning.“The depression is expected to move towards Oman coast on Tuesday. The depression likely to develop into a cyclone. But it will not have effect on the state,” said P S Biju, scientist at the Meteorological Department.Heavy rainfall was reported in the southern parts of the state, while northern regions received poor rainfall. Kochi reported only 0.4 mm rainfall from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 pm. Thiruvananthapuram received 26 mm rainfall on Sunday, while there was 7 cm rainfall on Saturday night. The Met Department has issued warning against fishermen venturing into the sea. The sea remained rough for the second consecutive day.In the recent past, North-East monsoon was weak in the state. But for the past two days, the state received heavy rainfall owing to the presence of depression, developed near the Kanyakumari coast.
