State needs 155 tmc ft of water

Opposition leader in the state Assembly Siddaramaiah questioned as to how the state can release water to Tamil Nadu when it is reeling under drought condition.

Speaking to reporters in Nanjangud on Friday, he said that 143 taluks, including, 47 taluks in Cauvery river basin were declared as drought-hit.

“The state is need of 155 tmc ft of water as against the present availability of 55 tmc ft in four reservoirs. In such a scenario, how can Karnataka release water to Tamil Nadu?” he questioned.

Stating that the Congress is not politicising the Cauvery issue, he said that state government did not consult political parties before filing an affidavit on September 12 before the Supreme Court promising 9,000 cusecs of water.

“Now, it is a shame if the state does not release even a drop of water to Tamil Nadu,” he said.

On whether former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa will join the Congress, he said, “How can we let him to join the Congress when he is facing corruption charges. We will also not join hands with JD(S) in the up coming elections,” he said.

CM’s Apology Sought

Former minister and Congress leader D K Shivakumar has urged Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to apologise to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for walking out of the Cauvery River Authority meeting on September 19.

He said the CM and others should have sat through the meeting, and appealed to the PM to reconsider his decision in view of the low water storage and inflow in reservoirs.

Speaking to reporters in Mandya on Saturday, he said a Congress delegation would meet the PM and apprise him of the real situation.
