KOCHI: In a major development, police has reportedly cracked a ration scam in Kochi and seized about 350 bags of provisions to be rationed —125 bags of wheat, 40 sacks of rice, 9 sacks of sugar, 73 sacks of broken rice, 39 sacks of ‘atta’, transported from the government godown to a house where it was stored for illegal sale, on Monday night Police sources told ‘City Express’ that they seized around 300 bags of wheat from a house in Elamakkara which was brought from a government godown last week. Sources said that the shadow police conducted raids at the house and arrested truck driver Sunil Kumar who is also running a wholesale shop near his house. According to Special Branch Assistant Commissioner M N Ramesh, the truck driver was arrested a week ago from Karthrikadavu when he was illegally transporting the ration materials from the Eloor government warehouse to another place in the district. The raid was conducted after questioning the truck driver. The Civil Supplies department conducted the estimate of the wheat seized from the house. According to civil supplies officials the seized wheat would be around 21,000 kg and it is one of the biggest catch in recent times.
