New Delhi: Parliament was adjourned for the day on Thursday after tributes were paid to industrialist Lalit Suri and BSP founder Kanshi Ram.

Rajya Sabha was adjourned without transacting any business as a mark of respect to industrialist Lalit Suri, a sitting member of the House, who passed away last month.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat described 60-year-old Suri, who passed away in London last month, as a leading industralist and a dedicated social worker. "In the passing away of Lalit Suri, the country has lost a distinguished personality," he said.

The House also mourned the death of Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram who died at the age of 73 on October 9. Shekhawat said Kanshi Ram, a former member of the Rajya Sabha, was a champion of dalits.

The Rajya Sabha also mourned the death of former members Sriman Prafulla Goswami, Lalitha Rajagopalan, Ahmad Hossain Mondal and Santosh Kumar Sahu.

Goswami, who passed away on June 27 at the age of 96, represented Assam in Rajya Sabha for two terms. The Chairman described him as a veteran parliamentarian and a dedicated social worker.

In the Lok Sabha, three new members of the Union Council of Ministers, including Defence Minister A K Antony, were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Lok Sabha was also adjourned for the day after paying homage to BSP leader Kanshi Ram and four other former members who passed away recently.

Besides Antony, the former Chief Minister of Kerala, the other two are M H Ambareesh, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, and Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav, Minister of State for Water Resources.

There was a murmur of protest from BJP benches when Singh introduced Yadav who had earlier quit as a Minister of State. Speaker Somnath Chatterjee asked Opposition members, led by V K Malhotra, to take their seats as it was a "solemn occasion".
