Mumbai: The archived programmes of Doordarshan and All India Radio would be made available to the public through a mobile application soon, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar today said.

"Sometimes I wonder what is to be done with four lakh hours of recording in the archives of Akashvani and three lakh hours of recording with Doordarshan. This is a treasure trove, and it should be open to the public. We are trying to give access to it through a mobile app," he said.

Javadekar was addressing a gathering in suburban Mumbai after releasing the book The Wonder That Was Cylinder, written by AN Sharma. The book is about the earliest available sound recordings in the country.

The recordings in those days were made on 'cylinders' (hollow wax rolls) which were played on phonographs, before gramophones and disk-shaped records took over.

The minister also said on this occasion that politics was "a medium to change the life of the common man".
