Move to improve cop-student ties

The arrest of three juvenile students in connection with a case of bike-lifting on Wednesday has revealed the feeble interaction existing between the police and the student community in the city.

With the number of cases against juveniles involved in criminal offences increasing day by day, the top brass of the city police are of the opinion that along with strict policing, the interaction with the students should be strengthened. Towards this end, the city police are planning to strengthen the Student Police Cadet (SPC) project and the Special Protection Groups (SPG).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Putta Vimaladitya said that in addition to legal enforcement, the students should be properly educated on the seriousness of crime and the repercussions of getting involved in criminal activities. ”We have to pursue a two-way policy: better policing and creating awareness among the students. The number of students who are getting involved in criminal acts is increasing day by day. Projects like SPG and SPC can play a big role in educating the teenagers,” he said.

But the worrying fact is that more infringements are occurring on the part of the students of private educational institutions, where the SPC and the SPG have not been formed yet. The same concern was echoed by Fort AC M Radhakrishnan Nair.

”The two projects have made a positive impact on the students of government schools and we are witnessing the results. But in the case of private institutions, the situation is getting out of control. In most of the schools, the parents and teachers are interested only in the academic performance of their wards. Their moral side and behaviour are often ignored. The final result is that many of the students end up as criminals,” he said.
