BHUBANESWAR: A torrential downpour, one of the heaviest of the season, left Bhubaneswar running for cover on Saturday.  In an hour and a half, the Capital received close to 10-cm rain. As the heavens opened, normal life went  out of gear. As People ran for protection, busy streets suddenly wore deserted look. Between 3 pm and 4.30 pm, life almost came to a standstill. The India Meteorological Department attributed the rains to a troughline in the upper air and the monsoon trough. The rains, it said, were confined to certain pockets like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur and Nayagarh. Cuttack received 8.3 cm rain during the period while Jajpur recorded over 4.5 cm. However, Bhubaneswar bore the brunt. Most of the residential colonies faced severe waterlogging because of the lingering drainage and sewerage work.  Besides, residents of low-lying areas near Acharya Vihar, Jayadev Vihar, Palasuni, Laxmi Sagar, Shatabdi Nagar had a hard time negotiating with the storm water. Similar was the tale with the roads connecting Kalpana Square to AG Square. The roads, which have shrunk because of the ongoing flyover work, were almost flooded. The Cuttack-Puri Road too was submerged,  affecting traffic. The heavy rain accompanied by gusty wind brought down trees at some places and even caused minor road accidents. The weatherman said heavy rains are expected in many parts of the State during the next 48 hours.
