Srinagar: In a rare incident, which comes as a cause for worry for the Jammu and Kashmir Police, around a dozen heavily armed militants entered the home of a senior police officer in south Kashmir and ransacked property worth lakhs of rupees.

Confirming the incident, which occurred on Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir DGP SP Vaid told News 18 that if militants have resorted to such actions, the police will “hit them back and hard”.

"They should realise that they have families too," he said.

A senior police officer from south Kashmir said a group of militants with automatic rifles entered the house of one officer, who belongs to Shopian.

Once inside the premises, the suspected militants, he said, threatened the family and said the police officer must quit his job or “face the consequences”.

“They told his family members that since the police were destroying property of militants and those who were providing them shelter, there was bound to be retaliation,” he said.

The militants reportedly destroyed household and electronic items, but no member of the officer’s family was injured.

"It has happened before as well, but this time it was reported. We will deal with it,” he added.

The senior police officer said a similar incident occurred three days ago and that Hizbul Mujahideen militants had issued similar threats earlier as well. Militant commander Burhan Wani, who was killed by security forces last year, too had asked policemen to quit counter-militancy operations.

The officer said such incidents could affect the morale of the policemen, but Vaid disagreed.

Confirming the Shopian incident, South Kashmir DIG SP Pani, said: “Yes the incident took place. We are investigating the case.”
