CHENNAI: The DMK's call to boycott classes on Friday seeking immediate implementation of Samacheer Kalvi or Uniform System of Education (USE) evoked lukewarm response from students in the city.
Though around 9,000 students boycotted classes in the districts in response to the party's call, city students kept away. No student from city colleges participated in the protest, said a police source. Though the students of Nandanam Arts College staged a demonstration inside the college demanding implementation of USE, it was organised on their own and had nothing to do with the DMK's boycott call, said a senior police officer.

Anticipating the participation of students from all Arts and Science colleges in the city, adequate police personnel were deployed, particularly in front of the Pachaiyappa's College - the nerve centre of students' politics since the 1960s when the DMK spearheaded the antiHindi agitation. The students, however, were seen rushing to the campus to attend classes on Friday.

The situation was more or less same in the schools. Anticipating that the DMK functionaries might picket in front of schools to mobilise students for the protest, the city police deployed two police personnel at all schools since 6 am. But, the party cadre did not show up.

The partymen managed to mobilise students only at the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Higher Secondary School at Palavakkam. Though they attempted to stage a protest, they were picked up by police.

A senior DMK leader admitted that the students' wing of the party was weak. But he claimed that they organised protests in many places outside schools.
