Mitchell Marsh celebrated winning the 2023 ODI World Cup with Australia to his heart’s content while wearing the winner’s medal.
Marsh took his friends out to Rottnest Island for the post-world cup celebration.
“I basically carried on the celebrations myself at Rottnest,” Marsh told cricket.com.au.
“I had the medal around my neck for the whole day, which I kind of thought may have been entering ‘flog territory’. If it wasn’t a World Cup, then probably. But everyone seemed to get around it. We had other people driving past on boats, yelling out. I certainly felt the love … I was swimming with it on – all sorts. There’s a bit of Pete Murray about it (the medal) – it’s seen better days – but it’s all part of the story,” he added.
The following day he received a text from Australia head coach Andrew McDonald if he was done celebrating.
“I had a couple of texts from Ronnie saying, ‘have you stopped yet?’ That was on Thursday. I said ‘just give me one more day, coach’,” Marsh said.
Marsh will be back in action during the upcoming home Test series against Pakistan.
Having cemented his place across formats, Marsh has also become part of the conversations surrounding a potential promotion as Test opener once David Warner retires.
Marsh isn’t reading too much into it as of now.
“if Ron (McDonald, coach) is okay for me to try and get 150 before lunch on day one, I’ll put my hand up! There’s obviously been a little bit of chat about it and that’s all well and good – but I just got back into the team,” he said.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying my role at number six and that’s really all I’ll focus on. I’m happy for people to talk about it, but I don’t like being a part of the conversation because ultimately my job is to bat number six next week, and that’s what I’m looking forward to,” he added.
Marsh’s inclusion means Cameron Green has taken a back seat considering the similar role the two allrounders play.
However, Marsh is confident the youngster has a bright future ahead of him.
“This little period for ‘Greeny’ is just a part of his story, that’s the way I see it. We all know that he’s got a huge future ahead of him. In any team that he plays in, he’s going to be vitally important, and there’s no doubt we’ll see him back in the team at some point in time in the near future. He’ll be back for sure,” he said.
